It will open in this tab, I can’t get it to open in a new tab.
I found the video at the Insight Exchange Vimeo Channel — took some digging to find it because it was at the very bottom of their list of videos!
In the masterclass, Linda Coates gives detailed examples of how language is used to conceal abuse, obfuscate the perpetrator’s responsibility, conceal victims’ resistance, and blame and pathologise victims.
The examples she gives come from:
- A perpetrator (Miles Davis, the famous jazz musician).
- A psychiatrist writing about serial perpetrators of child rape.
- A judge.
- A politician.
- A psychologist (Judith Herman, in her book Trauma and Recovery; that’s at 1:07:51 in the video).
- A court document.

For those who mightn’t (for any number of reasons) have the time to watch the entire video — Masterclass Language and Violence Dr Linda Coates 2018 — that Barb included in her post, I’m including the following list of topics and their time marks / stamps from below the video. And the closed captioning option can be turned on and off, for anyone who (for any number of reasons) might or might not want to read what is being spoken.
