A Cry For Justice

Awakening the Evangelical Church to Domestic Violence and Abuse in its Midst

Cry for Justice Chorus

UPDATE  Sept 2021:  I have come to believe that Jeff Crippen does not practise what he preaches.  He vilely persecuted an abuse victim and spiritually abused many other people in the Tillamook congregation. Go here to read the evidence. Jeff has not gone to the people that he spiritually and emotionally abused. He has not apologised to them, let alone asked for their forgiveness.

To the tune of Do You Hear The People Sing from Les Miserables.

Do you see the rising tide
Gathering to the victim’s side?
Rising to support survivors
Who will not be made to hide!
For the victims of abuse
Cries for justice shall proclaim
So that the bondage will be halted in Jesus’ name.

Will you detect the leaven of the swollen Pharisee?
Will you stand with those who faint, will you assist those who may flee?
Oh will you believe in truth of the victim’s plea?

Will you join in the crusade?
Will you stand up and fight with me?
Somewhere beyond the Pharisees is there a church you long to see?
Do you feel the victims’ pain?
Maybe you hear their desolate cries?
Let us destroy the stronghold of the abusers’ lies!

Beyond the walls by which false shepherds kept us trapped and weak,
Is abundant life in Christ, the life we long so much to seek;
Oh let us tell this to our brothers and sisters who weep!

Will you join in the crusade?
Will you stand up and fight with me?
Somewhere beyond the Pharisees is there a church you long to see?
Do you feel the victims’ pain?
Maybe you hear their desolate cries?
Let us destroy the stronghold of the abusers’ lies!

Our lives may soon be over but for those who come behind
Let’s mark and tread a walkway that will easily be found,
That freedom for victims may strongly and clearly resound.

Will you join in the crusade?
Will you stand up and fight with me?
Somewhere beyond the Pharisees is there a church you long to see?
Do you feel the victims’ pain?
Maybe you hear their desolate cries?
Let us destroy the stronghold of the abusers’ lies!

When we will live in Christ’s own presence in the garden of the Lord
There’ll be no need of weapons and we’ll lay aside our swords;
But let us not shirk from the battle and lose our reward.

Will you join in the crusade?
Will you stand up and fight with me?
Somewhere beyond the Pharisees is there a church you long to see?
Do you feel the victims’ pain?
Maybe you hear their desolate cries?
Let us destroy the stronghold of the abusers’ lies!

Note: According to Wikipedia, the French term les miserables can be translated as: the wretched, the miserable ones, the poor ones, the wretched poor, or the victims.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.   (Matthew 5:3-8  ESV)

  1. Bethany

    I LOVE THIS!!

  2. MeganC

Printing it out and singing it all day….

  3. Sorry to have added that copyright notice straight after the song, but I am going to share the link to this chorus on a number of other sites (the SGMsurvivors site, for one) and I’m hoping it does the rounds widely. And if one day it will gets commercially recorded, the royalties would help.

  4. Anonymous

Since watching the movie, I haven’t been able to stop singing the song. I am glad you penned these lyrics though!

By the way, how many people thought that one of the most telling and poignant scenes was the shutting of the windows by the bystanders? Just says it all, doesn’t it.

    • Oh, very good, Anon. I hadn’t thought about the significance of the shutting of the windows till you mentioned it, but you’re spot on.

    • Bethany

Thank you for pointing that bit out! As Barbara said “Spot on”. 🙂 I actually jumped when they slammed the first one. Having a door slammed shut and / or locked on me is one of my major triggers.

    • Anonymous

Yes, Anon! They were too scared of the leadership (in our cases, abusers), to stand with those fighting for freedom. All the more reason why we need to stand and fight, for those who are too weak to stand on their own. God is for the poor and oppressed and always raises up those among His own, to aid those who cannot stand alone.

  5. I changed the lyrics a bit in case it could be said that I have breached copyright. I changed the first line to “Do you see the rising tide” and the middle line in the last verse to “There’ll be no need of weapons and we’ll lay aside our swords” — an allusion to Isaiah 2:4 which says:

….they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks;….

If it is deemed that “Will you join in the crusade?” is too close to the words in the original English libretto, then I’ll try to find an alternative to that too.
