Don Hennessy’s book Steps to Freedom: Escaping Intimate Control is different from most ‘sympathy’ and ‘support’ books which rely on the target woman to protect herself. Instead it talks directly to the target woman while she is being controlled and hopes to give her the permission and the skills to protect her mind and her soul.
Sean Moncrieff interviews Don Hennessy about Steps to Freedom. [This episode is no longer available here, nor could it be found in the Internet Archive. Editors.] I urge you to listen to this. Once again Don Hennessy cuts to the heart of what is really going on when men abuse their female partners.
Steps to Freedom is written in practical and accessible language, including case studies.
Controlling behaviour, particularly of men towards women, is far more common in all walks of life than we have been led to believe. In this easy-to-read guide, best-selling author Don Hennessy offers practical advice to all those dealing with violent or controlling behaviour in their own lives, based on his experience of dealing with hundreds of such people in a therapeutic setting. Most important, he explains to the reader how they can throw off the shackles and live lives free from fear and intimidation.
Steps to Freedom: Escaping Intimate Control can be purchased direct from the Irish publisher Liberties Press, or from Amazon [Affiliate link] or other book retailers.
Don Hennessy is the Director of the National Domestic Violence Intervention Agency and the author of the best-selling How He Gets Into Her Head. He is a relationship counsellor who has worked for many years with women who are experiencing difficulties with abusive or controlling partners. Don has been interviewed in the Irish Independent, Irish Examiner and Irish Times, and is a regular contributor on the subject of intimate control in the broadcast media in Ireland and internationally.

Do you know when his book might be available on Amazon or Kindle? I looked it up and the shipping is as much as the book (for my part of the world). :(
I read and really liked his last book and look forward to reading this one.

Thank you so much for bringing this book to the attention of your readers. I purchased this for a friend (a former DV victim) and it was so very helpful.

I’ve written this as after over 20 years of abuse, I got out just over two years ago. It was a long struggle, but sadly I’ve fallen into the hands of another. My fault for not recognising or ignoring the red flags. I’m breaking free as I speak. The verbal abuse, fearful threats, spying etc are horrible to say the least, but that is my response this morning in my heart.
It strengthens me to write and let my emotions etc go. Very therapeutic.
I’ve made my mind up, I’ve broken all off, as I’ve realised I’ve been targeted by an abuser. Of course they think the opposite and are never to blame. It all one big game to them.
I feel stupid and afraid and very vulnerable, but I will survive!! I’m singing that old hit in my heart!!!

Hi Rebekah,
I modified the screen name you submitted with your comment, as the screen name you submitted with your comment almost matched your email address and might’ve been too identifying. And given the name of the book you read and are commenting on — Steps to Freedom: Escaping Intimate Control — we’re not sure if you, your family, or friends would be safe if the screen name you submitted with your comment was used.
I’ll contact Barb about a contact email address for Don Hennessy. Is it safe for you to receive an email from Barb with Don Hennessy’s contact email? I’m asking because I don’t know if Barb would want to publicly post his email address, and since Barb is the owner of the blog, the final decision rests with her.

Thanks a million. That would be brilliant as we have a case going on at the moment and would love to reach out and see if Don could help us. Thanks so much, if Barb could email with the appropriate information. Thanks.

Hi, Rebekah, I do know Don’s email address, but he has not given me permission to pass on his email address, either by email or in public. Also, he almost never answered my emails so I’ve given up trying to email him.
I was born in the 1950s, so well before the internet age; I know how hard it has been for me to adapt to electronic communication methods. Don is in his 90s which might help explain why he seldom answers emails.
I know Don sometimes acts as an expert witness for victims in the Irish Family Court, and I’m guessing that takes up a fair bit of his time. I’ve never heard of him being an expert witness or consultant in courts in countries other than the Republic of Ireland.
Sorry I can’t be of more help.
