Divorce in Deuteronomy 24.

The Deuteronomy 24 law is not in verse one, it’s in verse FOUR.

But almost everyone ignores verse four.

Jesus told the Pharisees that Moses gave that law because some men were hard heartedly exploiting women by remarrying wives they had previously (irresponsibly) cast off.

The rabbinic school of Hillel interpreted Deuteronomy 24:1 as allowing easy divorce for men (which they called ‘divorce for any matter’.)

The rabbinic school of Shammai interpreted Deuteronomy 24:1 as allowing men to divorce wives who had been sexually immoral.

Jesus denounced BOTH of those rabbinic interpretations because both were claiming verse one spelled out grounds for men to divorce their wives.

Israelite men were treating women like sex objects and household servants. Objects they could marry, divorce, and then pick up and remarry.

Moses was prohibiting this ‘legally legitimized’ facade that enabled men to callously swap wives like boys swap Dungeons and Dragons cards.

Most people have been brainwashed by preachers and authors who have ignored verse four.

Does anyone care? Do you care? Can you be bothered to think for yourself? Or do you want to just think you know what the Deuteronomy passage means, because someone has told you what the majority of pastors and pew sitters think it means.
