The Worthless Man
Proverbs 6: 12-19 NKJV
Ps Sam Powell
A worthless person, a wicked man,
Walks with a perverse mouth;
He winks with his eyes,
He shuffles his feet,
He points with his fingers;
Perversity is in his heart,
He devises evil continually,
He sows discord.
Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly;
Suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.

A Cry For Justice 
I have been following Sam Powell for some time now because his interpretation of divorce is very interesting to me. I just listened to his sermon on The Worthless Man. For several years I have been struggling with verbal and emotional abuse from a spouse. I have always hesitated to call it abuse because I think the word is overused in our society. I have been praying for wisdom and discernment for years, trying to see the truth in my circumstances. God is opening my eyes through Sam’s messages and other pastors I follow on the internet who teach related subject matters. I have always been very careful to make sure that whoever I am listening to is teaching straight from the Bible. I believe Sam does. Thank you.

I really appreciated this sermon, and am glad that ACFJ posted it. I will be listening to it again, that’s for sure.
Excellent sermon! Yet again, I see why only warriors with actual experience dealing with evil doers – especially those in the visible church – can correctly understand and teach passages such as this one on “the sons of belial.”
Many of us (in the past) had this SO wrong, thinking it probably was just talking about evil doers ‘back in the Old Testament times,’ or if today, somewhere ‘out there,’ but certainly not right among us…in many of our churches, homes, family trees, neighborhoods, workplaces.
Pastor Sam makes a good point about a common (typical evangelical) way of thinking about what such a class of people for whom God has a special dislike looks like: tattoos, motorcycle-driving, oh yeah – for sure the divorced are in that basket, of some political party other than our own, i.e., people who aren’t quite like us.
The naïve and gullible church-goers (that would be former me), preachers, and “biblical” counselors dumping burdens on the innocent and acquitting the guilty, all need to hear this lesson, as do “progressives” who believe in the inherent good and redeem-ability of all people.
I enjoyed learning more about Daniel’s vision (ch. 7), how the Son of Man is the term used for Christ in His role as righteous Judge. So encouraging hearing Pastor Sam spell it out that He isn’t fooled by the smooth talking, money-giving, flattering, “amen’ing,” grooming sons of belial masquerading as sons of God. Jesus knows a son of belial from a true son (child) of God. And his beautiful list of the abused, maligned, impoverished, isolated, attacked (true) sons and daughters in Scripture and today was touching, showing Christ’s compassionate heart for His own, as well as His inevitable fierce judgment of their tormentors.
This was a really comforting sermon. I learn so much from Pastor Powell’s sermons (and his blog).
And when people hate the abused, the victim is isolated, feeling the stinging hatred of so many enemies, it’s hard to know that it’s them, the wicked are the ones with the problem, but in these Bible verses, a victim can see that they are wicked. They are wrong. The victim is being targeted by sons of belilal.
God cares. God knows what is going on and what the wicked are doing. God will repay.
