The Pride of Life — part 12 of Ecclesiastes sermon series by Ps Sam Powell

The Pride of Life
Ps Sam Powell
Ecclesiastes 8:14 – 9:10 (NKJV)

14 There is a vanity which occurs on earth, that there are just men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

15 So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.

16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, even though one sees no sleep day or night, 17 then I saw all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it,yet he will not find it; moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it.

Chapter 9 For I considered all this in my heart, so that I could declare it all: that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God. People know neither love nor hatred by anything they see before them. 2 All things come alike to all:

One event happens to the righteous and the wicked;
To the good, the clean, and the unclean;
To him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.
As is the good, so is the sinner;
He who takes an oath as he who fears an oath.

3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. 4 But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

5 For the living know that they will die;
But the dead know nothing,
And they have no more reward,
For the memory of them is forgotten.
6 Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished;
Nevermore will they have a share
In anything done under the sun.

7 Go, eat your bread with joy,
And drink your wine with a merry heart;
For God has already accepted your works.
8 Let your garments always be white,
And let your head lack no oil.

9 Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun.

10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

  1. Sunday Visitor

    I’m glad this website exists. Here it is the Sabbath today and I wrestle with thoughts of whether or not us Christians are all duped into believing in God. There has been too much evil done to me. I no longer know what I believe. Way too much predation, corruption, and wickedness in the world. It overwhelms a person. Sorrow. Despair. Despondency. I wonder why God didn’t protect me from the evil that so very many people inflicted on me. I suppose it could have been worse, but I’m not sure about that anymore. It’s enough to kill a person from grief and trauma alone. Perhaps other Sunday visitors could say a prayer for me. Because I don’t know what to do anymore. Too many people have done too many wicked, criminal, evil things to me. It feels like God hates me and wishes for me to suffer, just as my many enemies do. They delight in seeing me in pain and suffering, making sure to victimize me all the more, in one way or another. So many people seek me out to further continue my demise, with such pride and smugness. I feel abandoned by God, to say the least. Thank you.

    • Dear Sunday visitor,
      God does not hate you. The devil hates you and he (the devil) is trying to convince you that God hates you. The devil is lying. And he’s trying to make you believe his lies. The devil hates Christ. The devil hates you because Christ dwells in you.

      I encourage you to rebuke the devil. As Christians we can do this not with our own power but with the power of Christ who dwells in us.

      I wrestle with thoughts of whether or not us Christians are all duped into believing in God.

      That is a lying thought put into your mind by the devil. If you can’t find in yourself the faith / strength to rebut it, would it help to hang onto the faith of Simon Peter:

      John 6:66-69 From that moment many of his disciples turned back and no longer accompanied him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?”
      Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.

      And after Jesus rose from the dead, the Apostles affirmed and reaffirmed that same truth. They could not have been deceived. They’d walked with Jesus in His ministry, they’d seen Him die, they’d seen the grave guarded by Roman soldiers. They’d seen the stone rolled away. They’d seen the angels who told them to go to Galilee where they would meet the Lord. They’d seen Him come into the room which had the door locked when they were gathered hiding out in Jerusalem after the crucifixion. They’d seen Him speak and eat with them in His Resurrection body. Peter had been personally forgiven by Christ in a one-on-one post-resurrection encounter.

      He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas [Peter], then to the twelve. (1 Cor 15:4-5).

      And Saul was struck on the road to Damascus and converted from Pharisaism to the true faith to become Paul the Apostle. What could he do but follow Christ after that encounter? Everything else in his life was worthless garbage.

      John 17:6-21

      “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me. I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours; and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are. While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

      But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

      “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

    • Jeff Crippen

      In a similar way I suppose this is why Elijah thought he alone was left. The more corrupt the visible church becomes, the more the pews are filled with false sheep, the more it can seem to us like Christianity is phoney. But Christ is not a phoney. He is truth. His people are often called “the remnant” and sometimes in church history that remnant is pretty doggone small. My faith has been helped greatly by realizing these things. In fact, if you take a walk through Scripture, you even find that in most eras the “clergy” has been the source of the most wicked corruption.

      • Memphis Rayne

        Understanding this Jeff “The more corrupt the visible church becomes, the more the pews are filled with false sheep,” helps me so much. Trying so hard to find a place for myself and children in the church while seeing they only had support for an abuser, really destroyed me inside. I mean at that time it caused me more hopelessness, in a way I felt backstabbed, and when my kids were always set aside, judged by church members etc. When you are being abused the most courageous thing you can do is speak out and ask for help. To see all the doors keep closing on us, to be the ones facing ridicule and judgement? Never the evil doer?? It was devastatingly heartbreaking. Socially inside the church we were shunned.

        If I had understood their evil, I would have been able to turn my back and protect myself from them, also I would of been out and away from this abuser years early without their input of confusion.

        When I left him, I left him with them…… that is their gift from us.

      What these evil people have done to you they will someday be held accountable for. They may be skirting around today acting like they have done no wrong… But their dark day of judgement looms ahead.

      I believe that our painful life experiences with phoney Christians and abusers, could very well be the very indicting evidence that may be used against them someday in judgement. They are filling up their cup full.

      As far as churches go, I quit playing Russian roulette trying to find one without ulterior motives to control the people.
      This site is my church home for now, and I also enjoy listening to Pastor Crippen sermons each week on [Sermon] audio: Pastor Jeff Crippen

      –just letting you know that I have wondered the same things that you are, and finally saw that God was trying to show me that so many people in my life that professed to be Christians were actually not.
      I am glad you are here. ☺
